Metro stresses that illegal dumping is punishable by law

Residents has called for action to be taken by the metro regarding illegal dumping.

The Advertiser recently reported on residents of Dawn Park at Nyala Street raising their concerns about illegal dumping at a nearby vacant field.

One resident complained that illegal dumping has caused the open field to be a hiding place for criminals and rats.

According to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, illegal dumping activities are reported at Customer Care Centre to managers, environmental health offices, waste management offices or metro police offices.

“Should someone be caught dumping, the offender can be fined, arrested by EMPD or have their vehicle impounded as well,” Gadebe said.

Gadebe said if members from the community wants the metro to assist in removing the dump they can contact their nearest waste management offices or depot for assistance.
