More than 1600 drug-related crimes reported in Boksburg over the last year

A total of 57 South Africans are murdered per day nationally. This is the reality of the state of violence in the country, as revealed in the latest crime statistics over the last year.

Back home, two of the police stations falling within the Boksburg borders have also recorded a high murder rate.

The biggest issue, however, is drug-related crime in Boksburg, which in total stands at 1 685 cases for the four stations.

Boksburg SAPS

Within the Boksburg Police Station precinct, 46 murders have been committed according to the stats over the last year, which is up from 37 the previous year, while attempted murder stands at 26, down from 33.

All forms of assault remain high at 334 incidents.

When it comes to property related crimes, burglary at non-residential areas have dropped to 94 from 157, while burglary at residences has dropped to 360 from 441.

There was also a decrease in theft of vehicles, down to 271 from 292 and also a decrease in sexual offences at 59 (of which 42 are for rape), down from 62.

Drug-related crimes increased to 194 from 145, and an increase in carjackings was also reported at 55, up from 32.

Reiger Park SAPS

The Reiger Park precinct recorded the third highest murder rate of the four stations at 26 (an increase from 24 from the previous year).

Drug-related crimes remain a problem within the precinct, with 500 cases reported. The previous year it stood at 495.

There was a significant decrease in sexual offences from 63 down to 39.

All forms of assault remained high at 442 incidents, while burglary at residential premises also dropped from 171 to 138.

Boksburg North SAPS

In the Boksburg North precinct, interesting increases and decreases in several categorised crimes were reported. Murder stayed on 9, as in 2017.

Of a great concern, as with Reiger Park, is the number of drug-related crimes which stands at 788, which is up from 693. Back in 2015, the number stood at 816.

Assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm is the highest it has been in the last six years on 140. Common assault went from 299 in 2017 to 306 in 2018.

The common robbery numbers increased with 13 and robbery with aggressive circumstances increased with 24. Malicious damage to property increased from 326 to 283 while burglary at non-residential premises jumped from 220 to 236 and burglary at residential premises drastically dropped from 480 in 2017 to 384 this year.

Carjacking went down from 91 to 78.

Sexual offences almost doubled in the last year (up to 45 from 29), as rape spiked from 16 to 26 and sexual assault went from 11 to 17.

Dawn Park SAPS

In Dawn Park, the recently released crime statistics has brought relief and challenge for the police station as far as crime is concerned in the area.

For the Dawn Park SAPS policing precinct, murder, sexual offenses, common assault, drug-related crime and malicious damage to property have increased.

The statistics for murder show that in 2015, 43 cases were reported, while in 2016 it decreased to 36, followed by an increase of 37 in 2017 and in 2018 it spiked to 42 cases reported.

The statistics reveal that it is the third consecutive year that murder has increased in the area, while attempted murder has remained on 34 cases reported for 2016/2017 and 2017/2018.

Sexual offences are still of concern. The total sexual offences have increased by 85 (of which 74 is for rape) compared to last year’s 79 cases reported.

Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and common assault increased by 261 and 285, respectively.

Burglary at residential premises, which has been an issue in Dawn Park over the last five years, decreased to 426 from 507 in 2016/2017.

Most alarming is the drug-related crimes which show that 203 cases were reported, while in 2016/17 it was reportedly on 154.

Theft of motor vehicles decreased to 81 from 91.
