The city manager of Ekurhuleni, Dr Imogen Mashazi, hosted a gala dinner and awards ceremony for Ekurhuleni women in uniform for their selfless contribution in the metro at the Boksburg Civic Centre on August 1.
Before the speeches, a moment of silence was observed to honour the women and children who have been killed violently by men.
The metro’s head of the Department of Human Resources, Naledi Modibedi, talked about how to become a self-driven professional.
“Be confident about yourself, there will be obstacles along the way but it is important that you believe in yourself that you can do it.
“Never allow setbacks to take you down, have goals and track your own progress,” Modibedi said.
Mashazi gave the keynote address as she advised women not to undermine each other but to love and support one another.
“When I introduced the concept of women in uniform, specifically those in community safety, I realised that not much was done for the women who sacrifice their lives in the line of duty.
“A little motivation can go a long way to ensure that we get the best from you. It is important that we assist the government to facilitate the advancement of women in society.
“Gone are the days where women could only be seen as second best in the workplace. Let us demonstrate that women are capable of nabbing the most notorious criminals, saving lives and that they can be the best firefighters,” Mashazi said.
She said men are occupying many top positions in different departments, so her department wants to change that by empowering women.
Long service awards were given to women who have 20 years and more of unbroken service. Over 20 women were awarded in different areas such as Boksburg, Benoni, and Brakpan.
Academic Achievers awards were awarded to four women who have gone the extra mile to advance their education in enhancing their profession.
The City Manager’s special awards went to three women who constantly excelled in all areas of responsibility and set high standards of service delivery in their departments.
Agnes Makwane, who received one of the City Manager’s special awards, a long service certificate and the Team Leader Award, said: “I feel so happy and overwhelmed because I didn’t expect so many awards. It shows that my work is appreciated and recognised by my peers and the metro.”
