Owls taste defeat but still qualify for semi-finals

The Prince George Park outfit’s reward is a daunting semi-final clash with table-topping Springs this weekend.

TW Boksburg Rugby Club suffered the narrowest of losses when they went 26-27 down against Brakpan at the Bosman Stadium in the two sides’ second match in as many weeks.

The Valke Peregrine League encounter, which saw the Owls through to the last four courtesy of log stipulations which duly fell in their favour, took place on Saturday, July 28.

It was also the ultimate pool match for both sides.

It was a dramatic turnaround in fortunes for both sides in a space of a week, which demonstrated the importance of home ground advantage.

The hosts took full advantage of home ground advantage and avenged the humiliating 31-66 loss at Prince George Park in the reverse fixture.

Boksburg skipper Willem Botes, who predicted that his side could still make the playoffs when their backs were firmly against the wall, said: “I must say, we were happy but did not celebrate as we still lost against Brakpan after the great win from that other weekend. I think we were all a bit disappointed in ourselves.

“But we are busy working hard in preparation for Saturday, what an upset it would be if we beat Springs.”

Springs suffered just a single loss in their 12 pool matches, winning the other 11. They’re deserved table-toppers having collected a total 55 points (30 more than Boksburg) from an available 60.

They also scored a total of 687 points, an average of 57 points per match.
