Atlas Bowling Club celebrates 50 years

The club is looking for more young people to join.

The Atlas Bowling Club (ATB) celebrated its 50th anniversary at the club on Saturday evening, July 28.

The club was established in 1968 as part of a sporting complex for the employees of the then Atlas Aircraft Corporation of South Africa.

It was largely built for residents of Bonaero Park, Impala Park, Witkoppie Ridge, Alphen Park, Bartlett, Atlasville, Farrarmere, Norton Park, Pomona and now Clearwater Estate residents.

Ekurhuleni Bowls (EKB) president, Craig Hall, who led the dignitaries on the night, said the following about the milestone: “It’s a wonderful achievement for the club. It was a wonderful night.

Ekurhuleni Bowls presidents Owen James (vice-president, left) and Craig Hall (president, right) flank Hall’s wife, Adie.

“I wish the club grows from strength to strength and that it grows in numbers. I wish them all the best for the future.”

The Atlas Aircraft Corporation of South Africa was established in 1965 to manufacture a number of sophisticated military aircraft and avionics equipment for the South African Air Force, as well as for export.

It was established primarily to circumvent the international arms embargo which commenced in 1963 against the South African government because of its apartheid policies.

Atlas Bowling Club treasurer Johan van Wyk and his wife Linda.

ABC chairman George Hinstridge said: “I think it’s a great achievement because bowling is a dying sport and we’re trying to keep it alive, and the only way to do that is to bring in new, young blood.

“For us to get to the next milestone, which is the 75th anniversary, we need youngsters to join.”
