Local football star shines as young SA team triumphs in Italy

The national side played eight games in total and won all of them without conceding a single goal.

Boksburg South u-13 footballer Duane Bennett recently featured in an international tournament in Italy, where he and his South African teammates saw and conquered.

The South African juniors went head-to-head with some of the world’s top teams in Italian giants Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Bennett, who was vice captain of the junior national team, said the following about the experience: “It was fun, adventurous and interesting. We learned a few things about football, including accuracy, concentration levels and basics.

“We also learned that to become a successful footballer you need three things: concentration, a professional mentality and a positive attitude.”

It has been an eventful few weeks for the vice skipper, who was also part of the Easterns team who finished third at the KwaZulu-Natal district tournament just days before he departed for Italy.

Unlike his performance during the tournament held in the country where one of the biggest boys in the motoring industry, Ferrari, was born, Bennett gave a much better individual performance in KZN, where he netted seven times and was also skipper for the side.

The tournament also saw prevalent Gauteng representation, with Bennett’s Easterns team joined by East Rand, Central Gauteng and Easterns B.

The eventual winners of the meeting also came from Gauteng: East Rand.

Team SA also faced the likes of Napoli, Bologna and St Marino in Europe.
