Mchunu vs Tommy Oosthuizen in the pipeline

According to Oosthuizen’s long-time trainer, Harold Volbrecht, the bout becoming a reality hinges on Boxing SA’s response to his application on behalf of his client who is in hot water over drug possession.

One of South African boxing’s most anticipated fights looks set to finally happen.

This will see the clash of two of the country’s best southpaws in SA and ABU cruiserweight champion Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu and Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen.

Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman made an announcement a few weeks ago that if Mchunu beat Ricards Bolotniks on June 23, which he did, then his next fight would be against former light heavyweight champion, Oosthuizen.

The champion proved too strong for his opponent at Emperors Palace, taking him out in the sixth round of the scheduled 10-round bout.

Oosthuizen was among the dignitaries that were present at Golden Gloves’ ‘Bombs Away’ tournament.

The Oosthuizen camp was asked to produce various documentation to the country’s boxing council to prove that the former IBO super middleweight pugilist is clear from trouble.

The documents that Oosthuizen’s camp handed to Boxing SA included Oosthuizen’s blood test results, letters from the court and a motivation letter from Volbrecht.

Volbrecht added: “We’ve done all medicals. He’s clear from all his cases and he’s even paid for his boxing license.”

Should Boxing SA give the eagerly awaited bout the green light, it is scheduled to take place at Emperors Palace on September 1.

Quizzed on the match-up itself, Volbrecht commented: “They know each other, it’s going to be a good fight and it’s what the public wants.

“Tommy is training hard, he’s in good shape. If he wins and stays on the straight road, he will be on top again. We’re going to take it step by step. It’s up to him whether he wants to be world champion again.”

Oosthuizen’s last fight was in May last year when he suffered his first loss to Igor Mikhalkin for the IBO light heavyweight title in Germany. His record fell to 27-1-2; 16. Mchunu improved his record to 19-4; 12 following the Bolotniks victory.

Boxing SA was expected to give Oosthuizen’s camp a response last week (July 6), after the Advertiser’s print day.

The Advertiser will be keeping a close eye on the developments.
