Blues register first win of the season

Desperate times call for desperate measures and with the team finding itself in a threatening situation at the bottom of the log, coach Ernest Seforo went for broke as he fielded four attackers.

Following an 11-game winless run coming into the fixture, the Boksburg Football Club’s senior Super League side finally claimed their first win of the campaign.

They emerged as 3-2 victors over visitors Kempton Park at the Boksburg City Stadium on Saturday, June 2.

The strategic move by the coach to reshuffle the formation saw Khaya Phungwayo and Thapelo Mamahlodi added as holding midfielders to neutralise the pressure when Kempton was in possession. This also meant that midfield general Kagisano ‘Sgora’ Seforo had to start on the bench.

And it worked wonders for Seforo.

Boksburg looked anything but the laughing stock as they were quickly becoming in the Eastern Football top flight. One of Seforo’s quartet of forwards, Progress Phiri, opened the scoring as early as the 19th minute before his forward-partner, Sifiso Nkwanyana, doubled the lead five minutes later.

The visitors gradually made their presence felt as the half progressed and managed to hold the Blues to their two goals.

Onlookers had to wait for half an hour into the latter half, to see another goal as Kempton cut the deficit in half with a goal of their own. But their momentum was short-lived as Boksburg restored their two-goal lead through an Arnold Tlopola penalty.

“The game wasn’t easy but it was very entertaining, Kempton Park is a very organised team,” said an elated Seforo.

“Our team played very well. I planned our approach and completely changed our formation – even my own players were surprised. I didn’t want to play defensively and sit back because I knew they were going to punish us.

“I was attacking them, so I didn’t want to give them time to rest.”

The visitors caught the Blues on the break in the dying minutes, which resulted in their second goal, but it proved too little too late as the home side claimed a well-deserved victory. – @SabeloBoksburg
