Robert Swanepoel’s big fight at EFC 70 marred by a low blow

“It was a good experience and I learned a lot. I think making your debut is a bit nerve-wracking for anyone and I’m glad I broke the ice" - local fighter speaks about his debut fight.

An accidental low blow marred Robert Swanepoel’s biggest fight to date against Mzwandile Hlongwa at EFC 70 in Durban on Saturday, May 26.

Swanepoel, known as ‘9mm’ in mixed martial arts circles, suffered the unfortunate kick to his loins, which proved to be the game changer.

After being given the option to carry on or stop the fight by referee Ferdie Basson, the Pit Bull Dojo Boksburg striker opted to carry on before succumbing to the discomfort and a bevy of strikes by Hlongwa in the first round.

“The fight was obviously disappointing as I took a low blow in the first few seconds. I could’ve stayed down, but with the crowd cheering and me not being a weak person, I decided to get up and continue fighting and it cost me the fight.

“My coaches thought it was an early stoppage to the fight as not one shot that landed did any damage, but I suppose that’s the way it goes: we never lose, we learn.”

Meanwhile, the EFC’s second two-division champion was crowned when South Africa’s champion Amanda Lino (4-1) defeated Morocco’s Rizlen Zouak (3-1) to claim the inaugural women’s bantamweight title, in addition to already holding the women’s flyweight belt.
