Watch: Five suspects arrested as Boksburg is turned into a war zone

More than 10 suspects, driving in four vehicles, targeted two G4S vehicles this morning.

Boksburg was turned into a war zone this morning following a cash-in-transit robbery that took place this morning, May 17 along corner North Rand and Atlas Roads.

Five suspects have been arrested.

According to Captain Mavela Masondo of the Gauteng Provincial SAPS more than 10 suspects who were driving in four vehicles started shooting at two G4S vehicles.

“A shootout ensued between the G4S security officers and the suspects,” said Masondo.

“The suspects bombed the two G4S vehicles and they took some of the money from the cash vehicles and fled the scene. The police reacted and gave chase, which ended at George Koch Hostel where they arrested the five suspects.

“Two G4S security guards were injured. One was shot in the leg and the other sustained minor injuries.”

Masondo said the police recovered a vehicle and a rifle believed to have been used in the robbery.

By the afternoon the police were still searching for the others suspects, who are believed to be hiding at the hostel.

Masondo said during the chase they had to use a police chopper to track down the suspects.

  • The guard’s story

The Advertiser spoke to one of the G4S security guards, who only identified himself as “Mthembu”.

“I have never seen anything like this in my life, I’m still in shock. Our van was the one in front and inside it was me and my colleague,” said the guard, who told the Advertiser they were on their way to Kempton.

“We heard heavy fire and we got out of the van and ran. My colleague was shot in the leg.”

An eyewitness who requested not be named said it was like he was watching a movie when he witnessed the heist.

Seen here are the bullets found on the scene.

“From the view that I was standing at, I saw a Range Rover Discovery, BMW and an Audi which were used in the getaway. Two guys got in the BMW vehicle with the money while five of them got inside the Range Rover Discovery,” he said.
