Metro’s transport head suspended over financial mismanagement

The expenditure reportedly relates to the construction of two taxi ranks.

The metro has resolved to suspend its HOD of Transport Planning and Provision Lusanda Madikizela over allegations of irregular expenditure in the region of R50-million.

A resolution for her suspension was passed at a special council meeting on April 4.

ANC chief whip Jongizizwe Dlabathi said the ANC caucus welcomed the decision that the allegations of serious financial misconduct against Madikizela be subjected and tested through an independent disciplinary process and in line with the disciplinary regulations for senior managers.

“We welcome the above resolution guided by our standing commitment that any manifestation of maladministration, fraud and corruption must be responded to swiftly, subject to due processes.

“Furthermore, the ANC caucus believes that the principle of innocent until proven guilty must be adhered to until a final determination is made,” Dlabathi said.

According to a report by the Ekhuruleni city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi, the Vosloorus taxi rank was meant to cost the metro R18-m over eight months.

However, four years later, the incomplete structure has cost ratepayers R54-m.

The costs of the Bluegum taxi rank had also ballooned from an initial R14-m.
