Beyers de Klerk celebrates a jubilant 50th wedding anniversary

The secret to their long marriage is love and dedication.

Former Boksburg mayor Beyers de Klerk and his wife, Charlotte, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 9.

Charlotte (nee Penberthy) met Beyers after she started working for his father, Ike de Klerk.

The couple were married in the Methodist Church in Johannesburg in 1968 and lived in Surrey Street, in Western Extension, Benoni, as newlyweds.

They then moved to Boksburg, living in Parkdene and several other local suburbs, including Boksburg West, Parkrand, Libradene and Beyers Park over the years.

As the owner of De Klerk’s Estate Agents and Auctioneers for many years, Beyers was a well-known figure in the city.

He gained prominence, often controversially, during his term as mayor of Boksburg, from 1985 to 1988.

Beyers then became chairman of the management committee, which played an instrumental role in taking Boksburg to city status.

He was also a member of the Boksburg Five, which backed several charity initiatives and the highly-successful community awards function known as Boksburg Celebrity of the Year.

Prior to this, the function was known as the Renault Celebrity of the Year and Beyers was the final recipient of that title.

He is also a life member of the ERPM Golf Club and the East Rand Scots.

Beyers and Charlotte have four children (of which one is deceased), nine grandchildren (of which one is deceased) and three great-grandchildren.

The family celebrated this special milestone at a restaurant in Bedfordview.
