Watch: Leaking hydrant still not fixed after six years

Emails have been forwarded to the metro without much result

A Witfield resident has poured out his disappointment with the Ekurhuleni metro’s water department for its failure to fix a major six-year-old water leak outside his property in Wilson Street.

This is despite his many complaints.

John Mellitchey claims that he first noticed the leaking fire hydrant about six years ago, and has since then been sending emails to the department requesting that the hydrant, which has been gushing water, be repaired.

The Advertiser is in possession of an email thread which shows a conversation between Mellitchey and a municipal official about the damaged hydrant.

Residents are time and again reminded to conserve water, yet municipal officials have allowed clean water to flow out of this damaged fire hydrant for over six years now.

When the Advertiser visited the site on Monday morning, February 19, it was found that the pipeline continued to waste kilolitres of clean water.

No comment had been received from the metro at the time of publication.
