VIDEO: Burglary leads to hot pursuit in Boksburg North

Brave and swift action by the house owner's son led to the eventual arrest of suspect.

Traffic came to a standstill in Boksburg North on Thursday, February 8, when a suspected burglar was cornered by security guards.

This nerve-racking incident, caught on a cellphone camera by a motorist, did not originate in North Rand Road, however. The chase had started a few minutes prior.

According to Capt Juanita Coetzer, communications officer at the Boksburg North SAPS, the suspect was caught red-handed while breaking into a residence between 3pm and 4pm in Ian Close Street, Bartlett.

“The son of the owner of the residence was notified of the burglar alarm going off and sped to the house,” said Coetzer.

The neighbours saw the suspect trying to break in and then witnessed how he jumped into his silver VW Golf 5 in an attempt to flee.

By that time the son had arrived and the neighbours pointed to the suspect, who was driving away.

The son gave chase in his bakkie. He caught up with the suspect on the corner of Elizabeth and North Rand roads, Byers Park.

“The suspect was making a U-turn and the complainant decided to drive into the suspect’s vehicle to force him to stop,” said Coetzer.

As a result of the collision, both cars came to a halt.

Security officers and then the police arrived on the scene.

The suspect was arrested.

“The suspect had a firearm in his possession and the serial number had been filed off. He also had house-breaking implements in his possession,“ said Coetzer.
