Spurs players get opportunity of a lifetime

Vosloorus Football Club’s Vision Hotspurs Soccer Academy is continuing to exist by its name.

The club recently announced that two of its stars were invited by various Swedish football clubs for trials in the Superettan League.

This league is the second highest in the league system of Swedish men’s football.

Midfielder Kabelo Lephuthing and forward Siyabonga Prince Ndlovu carry a lot of hopes from Vosloorus and the church, which the majority of the club attends, the Christ Ambassadors Gospel Church.

The club made its big announcement at the church before the pair boarded their plane to Europe, where they were expected to stay close to a month.

The big news arrived in the wake of Spurs coach Mzwakhe Ngwenya’s visit to Sweden in 2014 to establish contacts for his players.

“We were waiting for a call and eventually in November they asked me if I could send two players for trials – we are extremely proud of the boys to be given such an opportunity,” said the 32-year-old trainer.

“It’s something we’ve been praying about for a very long time and God has finally responded,” he continued.

“We believe they have the character to succeed in a different environment and I believe the foundation has been set for other players to get such an opportunity.”

Asked what formula was used to pick the two players out of a pool of multiple talents, the coach said: “They were the most hard-working and dedicated. We’ve always had a vision and a goal not to raise players for the Premier Soccer League (PSL), but rather for Europe.

Founder of Christ Ambassadors Gospel Church Ann Makhathini also had warm words for the team.

“I’ve known Mzwakhe since he was a little boy and he’s always been passionate about football and helping these children.

“He’s not only a coach to them but sometimes a father figure too. We even have a separate church team, which was also begun by Mzwakhe.

“All I can say is that I thank God; none of this would have been possible if it weren’t for him. I hope God helps him keep his good heart and that his passion and kind heart spills onto his young son.

“We wish the two boys all the best.”
