Shocking discovery of bird injured with blow dart

SPCA will attempt to capture the bird to administer treatment

A Beyers Park resident was shocked to discover a regular visitor to his garden, a bulbul, with a dart from a blowgun through its head and neck.

A blowgun (also called a blowpipe or blow tube) is a simple ranged weapon consisting of a long narrow tube for shooting light projectiles such as darts.

The resident, Brian Stratton, said it was clear the dart entered the bird’s head just below the right eye and exited at the left side of the neck.

He first spotted the bird in mid-January and said a neighbour had seen it a few days before that.

“The bulbul visits our garden almost every day. This injury is absolutely disgusting and cruel,” said Stratton.

After the Boksburg SPCA was alerted to the matter, manager Maggie Mudd said they will try to get a box trap in which to capture the bird and encouraged Stratton to continue feeding the bird in the meantime.

“Hopefully, the bird will be caught quickly and we can get it to a vet who specialises in birds to see what can be done,” she said.

Mudd reiterated that the SPCA will not hesitate to prosecute anyone caught torturing animals in this manner.

“Charges under the Animal Protection Act will be laid.

“It is disgusting that someone can do something like this to a defenceless bird.”

Anyone with information about the bird’s injury should contact the SPCA on 011 916 5906/7.
