Truck loaded with love makes hospital’s baby project wishes come true

Christmas came early for the Oliver Tambo Memorial Hospital baby project, headed by the Anglican Church of Boksburg, when they got a visit from Radio 702’s Truck of Love, on December 11.

Deacon Barbara Morrison and her five team members from Boksburg and another team from Benoni got the surprise of their lives when a truck sponsored by Spar delivered their wish list items.

Around the festive season, the 702 Truck of Love with Spar spread their wings to reach out to organisations by supplying them with items on their wish list.

The community of Boksburg and the surrounding areas nominated the Oliver Tambo Memorial Hospital baby project to be a beneficiary.

According to 702’s website, when nominated to receive a visit from the Truck of Love, their list of needs showed their attention to the babies as well as the mothers.

702’s Truck of Love visited Boksburg, on December 10, to donate disposable nappies, sanitary towels, Vaseline, baby soap, facecloths, earbuds, cotton wool, water (500ml), deodorant for mommies, and biscuits, to the Oliver Tambo Memorial Hospital baby project.

“While our delivery will go some way to help answer to their need, they were quick to add that there are more people they would like to help and that donations would be welcome,” the website reads.

Morrison said: “We are very grateful for what the 702 of Truck of Love with Spar did for us all and thank the community for nominating us.

Donated items, including disposable nappies, sanitary towels, Vaseline, baby soap, facecloths, earbuds, cotton wool, water (500ml), deodorant for mommies, and biscuits.

“We have shared some of the donations we got with other organisations for them to share out to people in need. We managed to cover 2 005 babies during 2017 and we’re looking forward to continuing to make a difference this year.”

The project started in 2013 after the church noticed needy mothers leaving the hospital with children wrapped in newspapers or in shopping bags.

Every two weeks, with the help of the community, church members and various organisations have handed out hampers of basic clothing, blankets, baby wipes and other products to the mothers of the newborns.

The aim of the project is to send newborn babies home in comfort.
