National hand-cycle record holder eyes world record

South African 10km hand-cycle record holder Sister Maseko is aiming to go a step further than his achievement early this year at next year’s OCC Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge in George on February 18.

Maseko set the new national record in February this year in the same town of George when he clocked 24 minutes and 34 seconds.

Racing in the more challenging 42km distance in next year’s edition, the hand-cycling superstar is eyeing yet another milestone: breaking the 42km record of 1:19:00.

The cycler, who’s a radio room operator at the Boksburg Correctional Services by profession, said: “All eyes from different departments at the Boksburg Correctional Services will be on me as I attempt to break the world record; Christmas is not a resting time to me, it’s a challenge.”

He added: “I have my secret on how I plan on breaking the world record.”

Before hand-cycling, Maseko was a cross-country and track and field athlete before being involved in a car crash in Vosloorus in 2001 which resulted in his paralysis.
