Reiger Park SAPS intensifies war against drugs

In efforts to rid the community of illegal substances, the Reiger Park SAPS said it has intensified its regular crime operations against drug dealers.

Police spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela said: “Our efforts have once again proven successful as members arrested 18 suspects for possession of drugs over the weekend (October 6 to 8).

“We worked around the clock as part of our routine weekend-long operation. During the operation, a 26-year-old suspect from Angelo was found in possession of drugs in Martin du Preez Street, in Reiger Park.

“He told the officers that he came all the way from the informal settlement to stock up on methcathinone, also known as ‘CAT’ because there is no one selling it in Angelo and the demand is very high,” said Phathela.

Phathela blamed the high rate of property-related crime in the area on drugs. He said some people even steal goods from their families and sell them to get money to buy drugs.

For that reason, Phathela warned residents against buying stolen goods because they are promoting crime and if found with the stolen property they can be criminally charged.

Acting station commander Capt Zakhele Dladla said: “The streets of Reiger Park are no longer going to be the haven of criminals and our mission is to regain the streets from criminals so that our community can also enjoy the fruits of democracy.”

The arrests made over the weekend:

Possession of drugs: 18

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: 4

Domestic violence-related assault: 2

Hit and run: 1

Selling liquor without a licence: 5
