Hot and cold local performances in opening T20 cricket week

The Boksburg Cricket Club redeemed itself in their second match of the day against Springs Old Boys during the opening week of the Eastern Cricket T20 tournament in Benoni on October 1.

The local club, led by a solid performance by the captain and opening batsman Adam Forbes, were victorious via the Duckworth-Lewis method after rain interrupted their run chase.

The Prince George Park Premier XI had earlier suffered a heavy 135-run loss to Alberton.

Quizzed on the team’s overall performance in the season’s opening week, Forbes said: “Overall I’m happy. It was a long off-season and the cobwebs had to be dusted off. Unfortunately, it took us a whole game to get back into the swing of things but there was a lot of positives to take out of the opening weekend.”

The local side limited Springs to a meagre 110 runs from 113 balls with Nathan Kruger (3) and John Haywood (2) removing half of Springs’ batting order between them.

All of Michael Heger, Joshua Thomas, Christiaan Opperman and Riaan Kent-Brown also grabbed a wicket each.

Forbes’ unbeaten 44 from 52 balls included four fours with Dylan Paninio’s contribution of 34 before being bowled by Zuvar Turkey proving crucial in the chase.

A relentless batting display by Alberton’s Eben Koekemoer, AD Caciano and Kyle McLean spurred Alberton to a comfortable win in Boksburg’s opening game.

The trio pioneered the crushing victory with 162 runs between them as Alberton raced to an impressive 227/3 in their allotted overs.

With the mountain to climb glaring in their faces a demoralised Boksburg could only manage 92 runs in their allotted overs as Alberton completed a complete performance.

In the bowling, Alberton’s Caciano and Juandre Potgieter both took two wickets apiece from four overs while Boksburg’s John Haywood enjoyed a personal haul of three wickets from four overs. – @SabeloBoksburg
