Michael makes his mark at boxing champs

Impala Park heavyweight boxer Michael Marks was recently crowned the Amateur Elite Super Heavyweight champion at the South African Championships, in East London.

Marks, who trains under the watchful eyes of his coaches, Chris van Aswegen and Johan Truter, at the Hammer Gym in Impala Park, won his final fight at the champs via split decision to improve his amateur record to 5-0, including four KOs.

The achievement means that Marks is now a double champion after winning the Gauteng title in Pretoria earlier this year, where he represented Ekurhuleni.

“It was quite tense,” said Marks of the fight. “This opens up the doors for me. I’m now eligible for national team selection at the open boxing league.

“I’d like to thank my fellow boxers and everyone who supported me in my planning. I’d also like to thank my fiancée, Miranda Fourie.”

The open boxing league is scheduled to begin on August 26, in Tsakane. – @SabeloBoksburg
