Cansa cuppa enjoys tremendous support

A 'Cuppa for Cansa' event in Boksburg raised R10 000 on August 19.

The event was hosted by Curves Beyers Park at the Hoërskool EG Jansen ‘restaurant’ where hospitality students prepared a delicious meal for guests.

Additional funds were raised from a raffle and allowing folk to take snapshots at a photo booth.

Students and chefs from Boksburg’s Capsicum Culinary Studio also supported the event with a live demonstration of how to make a quick and easy guilt-free cupcake, which the guests could then enjoy as dessert.

Guest speaker Gwen Janse van Rensburg, of Boksburg, spoke about her personal journey as a survivor of breast cancer and the importance of having a mammogram once a year.

EG Jansen’s hospitality students put on a delicious puff pastry dish and salad for guests at the Cuppa for Cansa event, which was held in the school’s restaurant. Seen with them are their teachers and Cansa SA and Curves representatives.

Gwen runs a cancer support group at the Trinity Community Church, in Sunward Park, every second Saturday of the month from 2.30pm to 4pm.

“The support group is not only for cancer survivors, but for everyone affected by cancer – survivors, carers, supporters and friends.

“We enjoy lots of support, fellowship, laughs and love at these meetings.”

Boksburg’s Capsicum Culinary Studio did its bit in support of Cansa SA. Chefs Nico Lombard (left, campus principal) and Louis Lesch (lecturer) were accompanied by students Mbali Nkuna, Nomsa Nkwanyana and Faith Mdluli. The team demonstrated to guests how to make a guilt-free cupcake, which was then enjoyed as dessert.

Gwen added that the group also assists people who do not have medical aid to have a mammogram done.

“In fact, we try to assist with anything to do with cancer,” she said.

She welcomed the opportunity to speak at the Cuppa for Cansa event.

Having a ball at the Cuppa for Cansa are Boksburg residents Shamim Nalubega (left), Barbara Neswiswa and Zanele Peterson.

“It is so important that we talk about cancer – not the ‘big C’. Let’s call it by its name and spread awareness and knowledge. Knowledge is the power required to beat this disease.”

The handmade cake Boksburg resident Astrid Pierce donated to the Cuppa for Cansa event.

“Every person who joins the support group receives a hand-knitted blanket, pair of bed socks and teddy bear,” Gwen added.

Yolandi Jacobs, of Cansa SA, said anyone can host a Cuppa for Cansa event.
