WATCH: The aftermath of the Cason Road fire

Three patients with minor burn wounds were transported to hospital for treatment after a structural fire broke out at a spray painting workshop in Boksburg North, Drivelines and Sprayflow, yesterday (May 22).

The workshop suffered structural fire damage.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) received the call around 1.50pm.

According to DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, the workshop is situated in a block with six businesses attached to each other.

“We had to evacuate personnel from the entire block and we cordoned off the streets for safety reasons,” said Ntladi.

“The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but it broke out in an environment of flammable liquid, gasses and LPG cylinders.”

“The firefighters managed to extinguish the fire in time without it spreading to neighbouring buildings.”

Only the motor vehicle repair shop within the block suffered smoke and water damage. A part of the premises’ roof was also damaged.

Ntladi thanked the SAPS for its cooperation and the assistance of a security officer, who was at the funeral parlour the time of the incident.

“In the event of a structural fire it is important to cooperate with the authorities for your own personal safety,” said Ntladi.

“Projectiles, such as pieces of metal from the roof, can injure bystanders.”
