Suspect arrested for murder of girl (10)

The special investigative team of the Reiger Park Crime Intelligence Unit has arrested an 18-year-old man believed to have killed ten-year-old Chrisania Carelse of Ramaphosa.

The arrest came after the police reportedly received a tip-off with regard to Chrisania’s alleged killer.

Officers followed up on the tip-off and arrested the alleged killer at his home in Ramaphosa.

Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela confirmed that members of the newly formed unit arrested the suspect on Monday evening, April 3.

Chrisania’s naked body, which had sustained stab wounds to the neck and stomach, was found in the veld next to the ZCC Church on Elsburg Road on Saturday morning, April 1.

It is believed that she was abducted from her Ramaphosa home, raped and murdered before her body was dumped in the veld.

“Our investigative team has been working around the clock to find the person who did this to the little girl. They vowed that they would stop at nothing to find the killer and bring him to justice,” said Phathela.

The suspect reportedly gave an incriminating statement.

“We are still doing a lot of the paperwork that needs to be done, but we are making headway. We are satisfied that we have a solid case that has been put together by everyone involved,” added Phathela.

The suspect is charged with murder and will appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

It is possible that he will be charged with kidnapping and sexual assault as well.

Samantha Carelse, the girl’s mother, said the arrest of the suspect could help her and her family to move forward to the next phase of their grief.

She commended the Reiger Park police for “diligent” investigative work.

The family further mentioned that they would be in court to watch the suspect face justice.

According to Samantha, the arrested man is a friend of the family and knew the deceased very well.
