Cable theft behind recent series of Reiger Park power outages

Residents of Reiger Park and Ramaphosa are fed up with the perpetual theft of power cables, which frequently leave their homes and businesses without power.

Those left in the dark include residents as well as business people in the area.

It has become the norm for cables to be stolen from the high-voltage substation, located in the bushes near St Anthony’s Road, despite the area being guarded by security officers and CCTV cameras.

“Cable thieves make off with power cables, plunging us into darkness,” says a concerned resident, Mark Henk,

“The outages also help criminals to enter our homes undetected and steal belongings. They also enable them to mug people walking along the streets on their way to work or vice versa.

“It also causes food to become unsafe and spoiled,” added Henk.

Another resident, who runs a business in the township, said they once had two incidents in a single week.

“Something should be done to stop this,” said the businessman, who wished to remain anonymous. “People are very unhappy and frustrated by the municipality’s failure to address our concerns. I personally feel that the people guarding the substation are part of the problem.”

No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to press. -@FanieFLK
