Rotary still going strong in Boksburg after 79 years

Rotary has been active in Boksburg since 1938.

This is when Boksburg Rotary was chartered and many of the city’s most prominent citizens served the community as members of the club.

A few of these included Harry Massel, Harold Flight, Issy Kramer, Valois Terblans, Jack van der Spuy and Gerrie Wolmarans.

Women also left their mark on the club during the years when men played a far more dominant role in the affairs of Rotary. Of these, President Carol Viljoen is remembered.

Rotary Boksburg chartered the second Rotary Club in Boksburg, Boksburg Lake Rotary, in 1977. Boksburg Lake’s current president, Nicky Savvides, was a charter member.

Today, Boksburg Rotary’s passion remains to help children but it also supports a number of other projects, such as acquiring wheelchairs, PolioPlus, the Lona Kruger Feeding Scheme, the Badplaas holiday for senior citizens and Rotary Youth Leader Awards.

Funds are mainly raised through an annual golf day and donations.

Boksburg Rotary Club meets on Wednesday evenings, at 5.30pm, at the Boksburg Rugby Club’s clubhouse.

Those who are interested in Rotary activities in Boksburg can contact club secretary Dave Beattie on 072 317 2188.
