National Water Week is an awareness campaign run by the government. It stresses the value of water, the need for sustainable management of this scarce resource and the role water plays in eradicating poverty and underdevelopment in South Africa.

The gathering aimed at educating the learners about water conservation and sanitation matters.

Learners were given topics to research and created models and prepared presentations about how to preserve water. These were presented before a panel of judges.

Learners from Chief Albert Luthuli Primary School and Rondebult Secondary School came first in the debating competition held during National Water Week.

Poovan Chetty, from the Department of Education, said events like these are important as they enable learners to spread the message on saving water.

“The platform is also utilised to educate the learners in order for them to gain knowledge and implement it in their respective communities,” Chetty said.
