End in sight to decade-old water leak

The Advertiser recently reported on a decade-old water leak which has turned a Witfield home into a wetland.

Louise Pretorius’ property in Calla Avenue has suffered severe water damage and she has been battling since 2009 to have the leak fixed by council.

She previously told the Advertiser that metro contractors had been on site numerous times in an attempt to repair the pipe, but to no avail.

After the Advertiser’s visit to Pretorius’ home in early February, contractors were again on site but apparently – as before – left behind a disastrous mess.

“They dug up a big hole to get to the pipe and left it as is. My front garden and driveway looked like a mudbath,” she said.

“They did not even secure the hole with red tape. Someone can fall into it.

“There was also sand in the road and they pumped the excess water from the ground into the street.”

She added that no engineer from the metro has been on site yet.

According to the Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, repairs were effected on the leaking pipe on numerous occasions.

“However, the water pipe is now badly damaged to the point that council is in the process of replacing it with a new one before the end of March,” he explained.

He said the affected resident can submit a third-party liability claim to EMM, which will be investigated and considered.
