Police nab seven Delmore protesters

Police arrested seven people from yesterday's protest in Delmore Gardens.

The protests, which lasted for almost the whole day, had police firing rubber bullets and stun grenades to try and disperse the crowd.

The angry crowd retaliated by pelting stones at the officers.

Reiger Park police spokesman Sgt Mashudu Phathela said police arrested seven suspects between the ages of 29 and 65, for public violence and also for violating the road traffic Act.

Protesters barricaded Commissioner Street with stones, and burning tyres from early morning until late in the afternoon.

Residents of Delmore Gardens took to the streets to protest against the government’s move to establish an informal settlement close to their established residential area.
