Anti Hijack Unit officer arrested for opening fire on cop’s car

The police have arrested the 48-year-old Anti Hijack Unit officer, who allegedly opened fire on a police officer’s car during a high-speed chase along Rondebult Road.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Cebisa Maseko, Capt Det Chetty of Moroka Police Station, was reportedly driving along Rondebult Road; when the Anti Hijack Unit members flagged him down.

“It was reported that Chetty continued to drive, leading the Anti Hijack Unit members on a high-speed chase along the road.

“The chase continued on Rondebult Road and ended next to the Checkers Hyper, after one of the Anti Hijack Unit members involved, shot out the tyres of the cop’s silver Polo Vivo,” said Maseko.

The car reportedly screeched to a halt, before the police officer allegedly took out his service pistol and shot himself and died instantly.

His service pistol was found in the car and it’s believed that the bullet went through his head, before it smashed the back left window of his car.

The gun was taken for a ballistic test and a post-mortem will be conducted on the policeman’s body.

Despite the speculation by many bystanders, that perhaps the deceased was carrying something illegal in the car, the police carried out a thorough search on the cop’s vehicle, but found nothing.

The Anti Hijack Unit officer who opened fire on the deceased’s car, was charged with attempted murder and is due to appear in court soon. -@FanieFLK
