Traffic nightmare; unrepaired pothole continue to pose huge problems

The Delmore mega-pothole that recently swallowed almost half of Wit Deep Road’s southbound lane has again opened up, creating dangerous driving conditions.

The pothole that appears more to be a sinkhole initially opened up in the street more than a month ago, impacting traffic and swallowing up tyres, while many people have had to visit their mechanics for a car alignment.

Municipal crews were, almost a month after the pothole opened up, seen patching up the pothole; but it opened up again within a few days.

Workers were, a few days after the pothole opened up again, seen in the area removing the sand in the hole and left.

A resident of the area, Sophia Thomas, says she’s finally lost her cool as traffic is building up in front of her home – which she believes is a result of “shoddy workmanship” being unable to fix the pothole.

Thomas said to exit her driveway in the mornings has become a nightmare, due to the traffic congestion caused by the cracks and potholes that open up on the road every so often.

“To avoid the traffic chaos, cars leave the main road and divert down through our street, Janeke Street, making it difficult for us residents to exit our homes,” said Thomas.

It’s unclear what has caused the pothole; and the metro is keeping silent about its plans to address the issue.

The metro couldn’t say when a crew would be able to come out and fix the road.

When this journalist revisited the trouble spot on Thursday morning, he discovered someone had dug up the sand in the pothole and cordoned off the hole.

The Advertiser also noticed a burst underground conduit, spewing muddy water into the hole.

Several nearby small potholes were patched up with pieces of bricks and stones.

Residents say there’s been a pothole problem in the area for years; and it got worse after the recent storms.
