Reiger Park fights cancer

The Reiger Park Cancer Support Group hosted its own Cancer Awareness Relay, recently.

The walk commenced early on Saturday morning, from the corner of Goedehoop Avenue and Sunny Street, to the Reiger Park Clinic.

The aim of the relay was to create cancer awareness and to pay tribute to cancer survivors, patients and those who died from cancer.

After the walk, the Reiger Park Clinic mobilised and tested people for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, breast cancer and cervical cancer (Pap smear).

Food and drinks were also on sale, in aid of the Reiger Park Cancer Support Group.

According to Ulita Billings, founder of the support group, her sister, who is a cancer survivor, inspired her to initiate the group on January 5, last year.

The main purpose of the support group is breaking the stigma of cancer, providing educational and spiritual support, and educating the community on cancer.

“Cancer is spiraling out of control,” said Billings.

“Cancer patients should know that they are not alone. Together we can fight it, hand-in-hand.”

Billings thanked everyone who has participated in the relay, as well as the Reiger Park Clinic, Masonic Liquor Store for the soft drinks, the Reiger Park Bikers and Werner van Nieuwenhuyse.

“I also want to thank God for making this event possible, as nothing is possible without him,” she said.
