CBC Old Boys crowned Division One league champions

Roger Boniface netted in the last quarter of the decisive ELFA Division One league game, for a 2-1 win over rivals Luso Africa, which saw CBC Old Boys being crowned champions.

The win also sees the local side being promoted back to the Premier League following their relegation last season.

In possibly the highest-pressured game in the club’s recent history, nothing but a win would do for Glenn Brierley’s men on their home turf, as a draw would have seen Luso celebrate a league win in CBC’s backyard.

The home side responded well to the pressure, as Gareth Miller settled some early nerves by opening his team’s account before Luso levelled matters, shortly before the half-time interval.

With the pressure firmly on the home side as the nail-biting action progressed, Boniface allowed his side to have one hand on the trophy, with a vital goal in the 75th minute.

With the trophy and the elusive chance of Premier League promotion in sight, Old Boys hung on to break Luso hearts and mark a remarkable turnaround from last campaign, where nothing seemed to go right for the side.

Brierley’s men travelled to Germiston a week later (September 17), to face the same opponent in the cup final, where Luso used their home ground advantage to full effect with a 3-1 triumph.

Old Boys’ league-winning campaign sees them finish with 50 points from their allotted 21 games, including 16 wins, two draws and just three losses. – @SabeloBoksburg
