UPDATE: Help trickles in for deaf boy’s family

The family of Dylan Scholtz (7) has started to receive much needed help, following their emotional plea in the Advertiser.

Dylan told the story of how their family is faced with an uncertain future since their breadwinner father, Leon, was attacked five months ago.

At the time his father was brutally assaulted at a nightclub and is now suffering traumatic brain injury, in simple terms, severe brain damage.

Following the incident, Dylan, his mother Charlene and siblings have had to move in with his grandparents, and his younger sister now lives with their other grandparents on his father’s side.

The Advertiser went to the family flat this morning (August 2) in Dayanglen, when Greg Wells-Clifton, from Pay It Forward/Youth on the Move, visited, to make some donations and to further assess the family’s pressing needs.

Wells-Clifton said he learned of the family’s plea through the Advertiser and that he received close to 18 calls from people seeking help on behalf of the family.

“For now we’ve just brought them the basics – we normally just place a plea for help on our Facebook page and let the people help,” he explained.

The page has about 20 000 followers.

Greg said within short space of time after placing the Scholtz family’s plea, asking for at least R700 to cover the basics, they received R3 300.

“But what I need to understand now is the family’s actual needs, because this goes beyond groceries,” he added.

“For example, we need to see if we can’t find a physiotherapist to help the father to recover. The least he needs is an assessment by a medical professional, to obtain a prognosis.”

Already, there’s a woman who has pledged to assist Dylan with hearing aids.

Dylan’s mother, Charlene, told the Advertiser that she is overwhelmed by all the help she is receiving.

“For five months it’s been lonely and scary for us, and all of a sudden people are coming to donate,” she said.

“I also received a couple of phone calls today from people willing to help.”

To help the family, you may contact Dylan’s grandmother on 011 922 1364, his school on 011 788 5430, or his mother, Charlene, on 079 567 5101.
