EMPD impounds 54 vehicles, 68 discontinued

Fifty-four vehicles were found to be in a terrible state to be on the public road during the EMPD Bumper to Bumper operation on Tuesday, May 10.

The operation targeted Germiston, Heriotdale and Delmore Gardens between 6am and 2pm.

In addition, 68 vehicles with more minor defects were discontinued and instructed to go for a re-test.

The roads that were focused upon were Voortrekker, Railway, Meyer, Lower Boksburg, Jupiter, Wits-Rifles, Lower Germiston, Elsburg, Johan Rissik and Passchendaele.

According to EMPD spokesperson, Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the 54 vehicles were impounded as they had serious defects.

“This included both service and emergency brakes, smooth tyres, oil leaks, steering mechanism with excessive play, exposed electrical wires, not licenced and registered, without number plates, cracked windscreen, doors not closing properly and excessive smoking.

“Vehicles impounded and discontinued included a midi-bus, 12 LDVs, 80 mini-buses and 29 light motor vehicles.

“Towed vehicles can be released on payment of R1 860 towing fee and the daily storage fee is R241. The vehicles can be re-claimed from the EMPD pound in Boksburg.”
