Four-year-old twin sisters burn to death

The Ramaphosa community is still shocked after two children were burnt beyond recognition in a shack fire in Road Reserve, Ramaphosa, on Sunday morning, April 17.

The deceased were four-year-old twin sisters, Josephinah and Maria Makgatho.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Mashudu Phathela, the incident occurred after the children’s mother left them in the shack and went to work on Sunday morning.

The mother allegedly left the sisters in the care of their siblings, age 9 and 12.

It is alleged that the other elder children locked the twin sisters inside the shack and went to play with their friends, before the shack caught alight.

Members of the community reportedly noticed the cloud of smoke coming from the shack. They then alerted the emergency services but it was too late when they arrived.

It is suspected that a stove had caused the fire.

The family has nothing left following the tragedy and an appeal has been made for support.

To donate something, contact the Reiger Park CPF chairperson Pastor Francis Coetzee on 083 647 8336.

Police are investigating.
