International Parkrun: a fun way to keep active

The Parkrun organises free weekly 5km timed runs around the world.

They are open to everyone free of charge and are safe and easy to take part in for those who want to keep active and fit.

It was introduced to South Africa by Comrades Marathon icon Bruce Fordyce, who oversees and tests each route before it is passed and allowed to be a registered Parkrun.

Here in Boksburg, it is run every Saturday morning at 8am at the Boksburg Stadium.

To participate, all you need to do is visit the website at www.parkrun.co.za to become a registered member.

When on the website, the registration option is on the top right corner. Go to “Gauteng” and search for “Boksburg”. Fill in your relevant details and print out the barcode sheet that is sent to you.

The Parkrun uses a system that allows athletes to receive an email after every run, including your finishing time, position and other information relevant to the Parkrun in your town.

Athletes are advised to bring their printed barcodes to the run in order to have their details scanned.

No barcode means no email results.

Furthermore, athletes are allowed to bring one dog per person, provided the dog is on a leash and you pick up after it if necessary.

The Boksburg Parkrun will be celebrating its first anniversary in May. It has over 700 people taking part each week.
