Police officer, security guard arrested for truck hijacking in Boksburg

A constable from TRT Unit, based at Honeydew SAPS, along with a security guard has been arrested in Boksburg for being involved in a truck hijacking.

A truck driver (complainant), who was on his way to deliver cellphones in Fourways, was stopped around 8.45am by a marked SAPS vehicle with blue lights in Jansen Road, Jet Park, on March 14.

According to the Boksburg North SAPS communications officer, Lieut Juanita Coetzer, the police officer asked the driver for his driver’s licence, when suddenly a white Quantum stopped in front of the truck.

“About eight suspects got out, pointed firearms and forced the security guard, who was inside the truck, and the truck driver into the kombi.

“They then sped off in the kombi along with the stolen truck,” said Coetzer.

“The hijackers drove to Malvern, Johannesburg, where the truck was later recovered.”

Due to the apparent suspicious behaviour of the officer at the time of the hijacking, investigations continued on the tracking of the SAPS vehicle that stopped the truck driver.

Investigators were then lead to the TRT Unit based in Honeydew, as the vehicle was driven by a constable from the unit.

“In a further interview with the guard, he admitted to his involvement in the crime that took place,” said Coetzer.

He appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on March 18.

“The constable who drove the SAPS vehicle has also been arrested and his residence searched. An undisclosed amount of cash was confiscated and two cellphones were seized.

“The investigation is still ongoing to track down the outstanding suspects.”
