Saints are SA champs
The Saint Dominic’s senior drum majorettes team recently competed at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (Samca) where they came out tops.
The drum majorettes competed against 12 other schools and clubs, beating Waterkloof for first place.
Drummies is part of St Dominic’s School’s heritage, and forms part of a rich legacy.
The squad consists of 48 girls from Grade 8 to Grade 12, and while the majority of the girls attend the school, there are some which come from neighbouring schools and towns, such as Benoni.
Annually there is a national championship where the top teams in the country get to battle it out for the title of champion of champions.
The event hosts more than 200 teams from various provinces, with over 2 000 athletes competing during the three-week competition.
The girls practice, on average, 12 hours a week as a team, going through displays to ensure that they function as one team.
For over 35 years, the Saints have been competing and are part of the Gauteng Majorette and Cheerleading Association.
They participate in the highest league.
