ELFA Cup: Boksburg through, CBC bow out

With league action taking a break, local teams Boksburg Football Club and CBC Old Boys took on Bonaero Park and Alberton, in their respective drama-filled quarter-final knockout ELFA Cup games.

CBC travelled to Alberton on Thursday evening, July 23, to take on the Eastern Premier League defending champions in a match that saw Alberton’s decisive goal scored in the dying minutes of the clash, for a nail-biting 3-2 win.

Meanwhile, Boksburg did things the hard way against Bonaero on Friday evening, at the Boksburg Stadium.

The Blues beat the visitors 3-2 in a penalty shootout after leading 2-0 at half-time. The teams couldn’t be separated at 2-all after extra time.

A brace, including an audaciously chipped goal by Bruce Pollen, put Boksburg in the driving seat and the Blues looked to be heading for a comfortable win.

But the visitors fought back in the second and forced the match into extra time. With the extra 30 minutes failing to separate the two sides, a penalty shootout would.

Boksburg’s in-field trio of Andile Mrubata, Tyler Fish and Donovan Kruger stepped up and buried their kicks, while goalkeeper Chad Lubbe made three telling saves to see the Blues through.
