Bike accident victim dies, wife in ICU

One of the two people who were airlifted to hospital earlier on Sunday afternoon, July 5 following a collision, has died.

Chellane van der Schyff told the Advertiser that her stepfather Willem Hefer was declared dead early yesterday morning (July 6) in hospital, at around 1am.

Her mother, Susan van der Schyff, is still in ICU.

“My mother went for surgery last night (July 6) and is in a stable condition,” she said.

Van der Schyff, who is also a biker, urged people to be aware of bikers on the road.

She said this whole experience feels unreal before adding that “we are getting there”.

The collision, between a bike and car, took place at the intersection of Paul Smith and Thirteenth Avenue.

According to Chitra Bodasing, spokesperson for ER24, when paramedics and other services, including Netcare, arrived on scene they found the patients on the pavement a few metres away from the bike.

This was confirmed by Santi Steinmann, media liaison officer for Netcare 911.

“They were assessed and found to be in a critical condition. They had both sustained multiple injuries and advanced life support treatment was provided,” said Chitra.

A helicopter airlifted them to hospital for further medical care and the driver of the car was uninjured.

The exact cause of the collision is unknown and authorities were on scene for further investigations.
