Extra wheelie bins required when using more than 240l of refuse

Residents are concerned over refuse bags and wheelie bins placed on the pavements not being removed or emptied in some areas of Boksburg.

Residents are also perturbed that the metro have failed to remove refuse on scheduled days, while some have not yet received their 240L wheelie bins.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the changeover from the plastic bag system to the 240L wheelie bin system is in progress throughout the metro.

Regarding refuse bags not being picked up, Gadebe said residents who generate in excess of 240L of refuse per week are encouraged to apply for additional wheelie bins at the Boksburg Waste Management Depot, on Reservoir Road, in the Boksburg East Industrial area (011 999-6277/5446/5310).

According to the metro:

* Only 240L bins supplied by the metro will be emptied. Bins not displaying the Ekurhuleni, EMM and/or the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality logo will not be emptied.

* No additional refuse bags, branches or any other form of refuse placed on top, or next to the bin will be removed.

According to Clr Ashley Rutherford, the problem is that residents of Boksburg have become accustomed to pay a fixed amount for refuse removal services irrespective of the volume of refuse generated and there was no limit to the number of bags that could be placed out for removal.

“For households that manage their waste in a responsible manner three black bags (240L of waste) per week should be achievable.

“The cleanliness of the metro is thus not the sole responsibility of the municipality, but each and every resident and business has a civic responsibility toward the cleanliness of the environment we live in.”

She said the metro has urged all residents and businesses not to litter, not to dump refuse illegally and to place out refuse only on the day of refuse removal.

Residents who have not received their bins should call the depot.

When applying for a bin, residents will be requested to produce a copy of the ID document belonging to the Ekurhuleni account holder and their latest utility account (rates and taxes).

“In an instance where residents are unavailable during the stipulated delivery times, arrangements can be made with the depot for bins to be delivered over the weekend,” Gadebe said. – @NalediBoksburg
