Tariff increases: Get ready to dig deeper into your pocket

The Ekurhuleni Metro has announced an increase in tariffs as of July 1.

The announcement was made by Finance MMC Moses Makwakwa during the budget speech delivered on Thursday, May 28, at the Germiston Council Chambers.

Makwakwa said the socio-economic condition of the City of Ekurhuleni, including the low levels of disposable income and affordability, are some of the things that were considered in determining the tariff increase.

Tariffs will increase as follows:

* 7.5 per cent for assessment rates.

* An average of 12.2 per cent for electricity as per Eskom request and in line with National Electricity Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

* 14.5 per cent for water, which is the increase proposed by Rand Water.

* 9.5 per cent for sanitation.

* Refuse removal will increase by 8 per cent.

Makwakwa said they have not made any increases in tariffs relating to cemeteries, libraries and recreational halls and the hiring and use of sports and recreational facilities.

He said that the Ekurhuleni Metro remains the most affordable metro in the country to live in.

“The average monthly household bill only increased by R209 since 2011,” said Makwakwa. -@NalediBoksburg
