Former top cop dies at 64

Former National Police Commisioner Jackie Selebi died in a Pretoria hospital this morning.

Selebi died after battling with a long illness. He suffered from kidney failure, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The Northcliff Melville Times reported, “In 2010 Selebi was jailed after he was convicted of corruption, and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for taking bribes from a convicted drug dealer.”

After he was charged, he was replaced as National Commissioner by Bheki Cele. He began his jail sentence, however, he was granted medical parole after serving only 229 days of his 15 year sentence in July 2012.

At the time, the Department of Correctional Services stated that he would be given palliative care as there was no hope of him recovering. There were also many speculations surrounding his illness, after he was spotted shopping in Pretoria.
