‘Chicken’ will spend Christmas behind bars

The man accused of killing Cuburne van Wyk (3), from Ramaphosa, Reiger Park, will spend Christmas behind bars.

Katlego Mpoku, otherwise known as “Chicken”, made another brief court appearance on December 17, before magistrate Emmanuelle Magampa, who postponed the matter for further investigation.

It is set to resume on January 5, next year.

Magampa told the court the Director of Public Prosecutions still needs more time to investigate the case as new evidence has emerged that has to be considered.

Cuburne’s grandmother, Daphney Fredericks, shed tears as she spoke to reporters outside the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court, immediately after the matter was postponed on Wednesday morning.

Fredericks expressed disappointment over the seeming lack of progress on the matter, and said they are starting to lose hope that justice will ever be done.

“We are just frustrated that it’s dragging on and on for no reason. We can’t take it any more,” said Fredericks.

Frustrated by another delay in the case, the child’s mother, Lezell van Wyk also burst into tears outside court after the case was adjourned.

Cuburne went missing in August and his partially burnt body was found, three days later, at a mine dump in Reiger Park.

After three days of intensive searching, members of the EMPD arrested “Chicken” in connection with the murder of the little boy.

He was arrested in Lambton on August 13, and he has made several court appearances.
