Ekurhuleni mayor shocked by Meyiwa’s death
Mayor expresses shock after Senzo Meyiwa was gunned down in Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni last night.
The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Cllr Mondli Gungubele has reacted with shock at the news that Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa.
“This is quite sad. This young man’s soccer career was blossoming. He was proving to be a major asset for both Bafana and Pirates. His prowess was clearly confirmed when he was given the captain’s arms band both at Pirates and Bafana,” Gungubele said.
“What makes this incident even more difficult to swallow is the fact that the man had a brilliant game for his team against Ajax on Saturday night, and less than 24 hours later he is no more.”
An ardent sportsman himself, the mayor encouraged the police to work around the clock and arrest the criminals behind Meyiwa’s death.
“We will do our best to ensure those responsible are brought to book but we need the community to work with the authorities to ensure that the net closes quicker on these senseless thugs.
“Rest in Peace Senzo Robert Meyiwa. Gone too soon,” Gungubele said.
The mayor also passed condolences to both the Meyiwa and Mulaudzi families.
