Possible collapsed mineshaft puts residents in danger

Residents of Jerusalem informal settlement are concerned over what appears to be an abandoned mine.

The shaft is located on the corner of Main Reef and Wit Deep roads, close to a combined primary and high school.

According to one of the concerned community leaders Kuli Fotoyi, the hole that is expanding due to land subsidence, probably as a result of the mine shaft collapsing.

Residents fear that school children are in danger if venturing too close to the site; the hole measures about eight metres wide and 30 metres deep.

Fotoyi urges those responsible to cordon the site off and then fill the shaft, before someone gets hurt.

He urges residents to stay away from the hole. -@FanieBoksburg
