Ducks in luck as fence will be repaired

The funds to repair the fence around the dam at the Leon Ferreira firestation have eventually, after two years, been obtained.

The funds are sufficient to span a 1.4 km clear-view fence around the area – the same type of fence that’s been put up around the fire station a while back.

According to Ward 22 Clr Benno Robinson, contractors will be repairing the fence over the next two months.

Robinson said that the geese at the dam have become a special landmark for Boksburg.

“A lot of people were concerned over the lack of proper fencing,” says Robinson.

Since last year, a concerned resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, has called for the fence to be replaced as the lack of a decent enclosure puts the geese at the dam in danger.

“This park is used by many people taking their dogs for walks, or those taking their children to feed the geese, while there are those who just sit on the banks of the dam to watch the geese,” says the resident.

She is one of many residents who have grown fond of the geese.

The resident also expressed her concern over the litter lying around.

According to the resident, the number of geese at the dam has diminished over the years, and that people have allegedly been stealing eggs due to the easy access to the area, resulting from the broken fence.

“I have been feeding the geese twice a day for the last 16 months, but it is not enough, because their safety should be a priority.”

Robinson thanks the community members who take the time to feed the geese.

He encourages any voluntary organisations that are interested and willing to feed the ducks on a fixed basis to come forward.
