Atlasville Spruit is not health hazard – metro

The Ekurhuleni metro says the Atlasville Spruit is not contaminated.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the blocked sewage line that has allegedly been contaminating the Spruit, was only reported to their depot last week Thursday (September 4).

“The matter was attended to within 36 hours, and the standard reaction time is 48 hours. This case was, therefore, attended to very quickly,” he says Gadebe.

The Advertiser recently reported on Clr Andre du Plessis, and also the Atlasville Organisation, saying the Spruit is contaminated and that the metro has taken little action.

Gadebe says the Goedeburg Bird Sanctuary has been cleared of the sewage and says there was no contamination detected in both the Spruit and Bird Sanctuary.

He says that this is the reason why the water in the mentioned water sources has not been tested for diseases such as E-coli.

“Tests are performed where contamination is suspected. No suspicion of contamination occurred to warrant such tests in this case,” he explains.

According to Ward 23 Clr Andre du Plessis, the issue seemed to be fobbed off and not taken seriously.

Gadebe denies these claims and says the matter is not an environmental disaster.

“The metro does take such matters seriously, and, thus, responded appropriately to the situation.

“Any environmental disaster is deemed serious. This matter, however, does not fall under that category.” -@TumeloBoksburg
