Farrarmere beats Sonqoba in Danone Nations Cup final

Farrarmere Primary School produced a clinical performance to edge Sonqoba Primary School 2-1 in the U-12 Danone Nations Cup Gauteng provincial tournament, at the WJ Clements Stadium in Reiger Park on Saturday, June 14.

The two teams made it to the final on the day after topping their respective pools with Farrarmere topping Pool A and Sonqoba topping Pool B.

The victory sends the Benoni-based school to the national tournament where they will represent Gauteng at the same venue on Saturday, June 28.

Farrarmere took full advantage of the Sonqoba goalkeeper’s struggles with set-pieces as they fired home two well-taken free-kicks on either side of half-time for the victory.

The scoreline, however, was not a total reflection of the absorbing encounter as Sonqoba enjoyed the lion’s share of possession with most of the action featuring in Farramere’s half.

Farrarmere’s Bradley Thomas opened the scoring with a dexterous, long-range free-kick to put his side in the lead but Sonqoba soon hit back through a Boitumelo Mokotedi’s deflected free-kick.

Farrarmere struck again from a dead ball situation, this time through Breidyn Schaper who produced a low-drive shot to regain the lead for his side.

This prompted Sonqoba to send more bodies forward in search of the equaliser but Farramere’s taller defenders remained resolute to secure the win.

The winners of the national tournament will represent the country at a world tournament in Brazil later this year.
